What SOC 2 actually is
SOC 2 is a report that shows how well your organization protects customer data. An independent auditor evaluates your controls against a set of standards, then issues an opinion. That report is what you hand to customers.
The Trust Services Criteria
SOC 2 is built on five criteria. Security is the required baseline; the rest you include based on what your customers care about.
- Security — protecting systems against unauthorized access
- Availability — keeping systems up and running as promised
- Processing integrity — making sure systems process data completely and accurately
- Confidentiality — protecting information meant to stay private
- Privacy — handling personal information the way you told people you would
Type I vs. Type II
Type I looks at your controls at a single point in time — are they designed correctly today? Type II looks at whether those controls actually worked over a period of time, usually several months. Type II carries more weight because it proves your security holds up over time, not just on the day of the review.
What a SOC 2 report is — and isn't
A SOC 2 report is evidence that an independent auditor examined your controls and formed an opinion. It is not a government certification, and it isn't a checkbox you pass or fail. It's a detailed account of how you protect customer data.
