What ISO 27001 actually is
ISO 27001 is an international standard for managing information security. Instead of certifying a single report, it certifies a system — proof that your organization runs security as an ongoing, managed discipline.
The ISMS
At the center is your Information Security Management System — the framework of policies, processes, and controls that governs how your organization protects information. Certification is an audit of that system.
Annex A and the Statement of Applicability
ISO 27001 comes with a catalog of security controls known as Annex A. Not every control applies to every organization, so you document which ones you're using, and why, in your Statement of Applicability.
Stage 1 and Stage 2
Stage 1 reviews your documentation and readiness. Stage 2 examines whether the system is actually working in practice.
